Over the last few months I have been working on improving my self image and self esteem. One of the biggest problems I have is my body and my wardrobe. I have a serious apple shape going on, which isn’t helped by the fact that I am 5’3″ only when I stretch my nose way into the air, with a serious love of pizza and cake. To make matters worse I have some limitations that I deal with because of my fibromyalgia. Yep you heard me right I have to dress for fibromyalgia.
I know your rolling your eyes. But I do. I can’t wear an underwire bra for more than 1 hour at a time. I can feel the pressure of the wires and it hurts like a mofo. I can’t wear heels because my feet rebel and just start cramping endlessly. I have to dress in layers because I am always cold – but there is the possibility that I could get hot. I can’t wear tight jeans for the same reason I can’t wear an underwire bra.
I have a confession to make. When I worked in an office I had complete outfits. They had everything – jacket, slacks, a blouse, a scarf, the shoes, the jewelry, and most of the time handbags to match. We could dress down on Fridays (but never in jeans) so I had casual outfits for Fridays and the weekend. I only wore yoga pants and work out gear when I actually went to the gym. Since I had Mermaid and started staying home all that has changed. I live in yoga pants and tee shirts from Hard Rock Cafes. If I go out I wear tunics and leggings or a day dress from Soma. That is it. That is honestly all I wear. I have a closet full of clothes and a garage full of totes that are full of clothes, but I don’t wear them.
I know that one of the reasons I quit wearing most of my clothes is they don’t fit my body shape and I don’t feel good in them. Who honestly feels good when their jeans are rolling down under their belly in a bunched up mess? When the material of their shirt is so thin it just shows everything that is going on underneath it? Who wants to wear a shirt that when buttoned gaps over the girls when? If you know who this mystery woman is let me know. I have a ton of clothes I am going to pay to ship to her.
So after all these realizations I am going to start making my own clothes. I tried this a decade ago and gave up when I couldn’t figure out how to make chiffon work. You know what? I don’t need chiffon to work these days. I have to figure out how to make knits work.
I am going to be sharing all kinds of exciting things with you as I go. I have found a new podcast, a year long sewing challenge that is free to join, and some books that i am going to share as soon as I get to try them. If you already sew your own clothes let me know! I want to check out your blogs, Instagrams, all of it. If you want to start making part of your wardrobe let me know what your doing and who your following for inspiration!
